Domodossola, the ancient Oscella dei Leponzi, capital of Upper Ossola, rises on an alluvial plain formed by the Bogna stream on the right of the Toce river. Physical, political and administrative center of Ossola, Domodossola has an ancient origin: it was founded in pre – Roman from the Leponzi (Ossola Lepontiorum); in 12 BC it passed under Roman rule.
After the fall of the Roman Empire (476), Ossola also suffered the invasion of the Huns, Goths and Lombards barbarians; they were succeeded by the Franks of Charlemagne, after which the dominion of the Bishops Counts of Novara began. According to tradition, in 917 Berengario 1 ° granted Domodossola the weekly market , which is still held today on Saturdays, attracting numerous tourists and villagers.
